Trio Subtonic is a genre bending power trio out of Portland, Oregon that blends groove heavy funk, experimental soundscapes and soaring soul jazz. Led by keyboardist Galen Clark (Anna Tivel, Outer Orbit, Sleater-Kinney), Subtonic explores a dynamic range of original compositions and reimagined covers, with an emphasis on improvisation and pushing genre boundaries. The band features Micah Hummel (Anna Tivel, Quickly Quickly) on drums and Bill Athens (Sleater-Kinney, Three Leg Torso) on bass.
Trio Subtonic releases their 7th full-length album and first vinyl print, The Space Around You, on December 8, 2026. This is the group's first studio release in nearly ten years. On this album, the trio explores a more experimental and introspective side while retaining the groove heavy sound and dynamic arrangements that distinguish their earlier discography. Imagined as a collection of soundscape stories spanning the last decade, these songs evoke existential disquiet and the moodiness of attachment in a time of change. The Space Around You is an uncompromising exploration of weird sounds, infectious grooves, and the playful interaction of the trio instrumentation. Featured artists include West Coast VIPs such as LA's Nicole McCabe (alto sax), Seattle's Andy Coe (guitar) and Portland's Cyrus Nabipoor (trumpet).
The listener will find funky, groove-oriented sounds, acoustic ballads, and gospel-tinged instrumentals. Trio Subtonic’s “populist” take on Jazz means that just about everybody digs what they’re doing.
